Merry Christmas!

Good Christmas Eve morning!  I wanted to make a quick post to wish everyone out there a very Merry Christmas!  I am busy smoking a nice cut of beef rib roast this morning.  We are having it for lunch in a few hours and man does it look good.

Someone asked me about Christmas Mojitos...  I did not have an answer for them, I was not aware of a Christmas themed Mojito recipe, so we are going to get to work on one for you guys.  I know it is perhaps a tad late, but better late than never!

Stay tuned...

Time for a Mojito!

Hey guys, just a quick post this morning.  I am trying to get back on track with the Mojitosphere.  My wife is pregnant and she is obviously my priority at the moment.  Without her being able to drink it has put a serious damper on my mojito making!

In addition to the Mojitosphere, I am also starting another blog/website called The Goblin's Lair!  The Goblin's Lair is going to cover all of the nerdy little hobbies & games that I enjoy.  It is also going to be the stage for all of my eBay items etc.  Stop by if you get a chance, and let me know what you think!

As for the Mojitosphere, I am going to make some mojitos this weekend - stay tuned!

Thanksgiving Mojitos!

Ashley and Aaron had a great little Pre-Thanksgiving get together last night! Ashley did a wonderful job setting everything up, and the food was delicious! I threw down some wicked Mojitos for everyone to enjoy, and we made smores on the chiminea. I think everyone had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

I am currently in Wilmington, NC with work, I am home during the weekend though. I have some special Mojitos planned for Saturday night. We are going to be using our friends as guinea pigs again! I also have another product review I will be posting. I hope everyone is having a good week!

Marti Autentico Mojito Rum Review

As always, I am game for trying something new. This weekend it was Marti Autentico Mojito Rum. I picked up a 750ml bottle on the way home from work on Friday at our local liquor store. I had been planning on making Mojitos over the weekend for our friends Jon and Lindsay. Without their knowledge or consent they were going to be the Marti Autentico test bed!

First Impressions:

The Marti Autentico bottle itself is attractive. It has small picture of Jose Marti, who is a Cuban national hero, and an important figure in Latin American Literature. The label has a nice lime green tropical theme, and the word "Mojito" adorned with limes and mint. Looks are important because 1/2 of making Mojitos for your friends is looking cool while doing it!

Aroma & Taste:

The Marti Autentico Mojito definitely has a lime/mint aroma and flavor. The flavor is not overly strong, but it will bring some pep to your Mojito. I thought the additional lime and mint flavor really made the Mojitos pop. Our friends were truly surprised, and they said these were the best Mojitos that they had ever had.

Here are the first four of twelve Mojitos I made that night. These are made in blue glasses, so the Mojitos have a bluish tint to them. The Marti Autentico Mojito has a slight sea green color to it, that made the Mojitos all the more colorful.

Final thoughts:

I was very pleased with the Marti Autentico Mojito rum. Like I said earlier, it brought a little more flavor to the Mojitos than regular light rum. I paid just under $17.00 with tax for the 750 ml bottle, which lasted through twelve Mojitos. I would definitely recommend the Marti Mojito to any Mojito aficionado!

How to grow your own mint!

Before you have a Mojito, you have to have mint! A small package of mint costs $3.00-$4.00, which if you love Mojitos as much as we do, it gets expensive! Mint has a lot of other great uses around the house as well. There are also several different flavors such as lime and chocolate! Here are some easy steps to growing your own mint. Just be careful, it WILL take over your garden!

Step1

Choose a site where mint can roam freely without disturbing other plants in your garden. It's happiest in partial shade and in moist, moderately rich, slightly acid soil, but it will grow in any light from full sun to full shade and in any kind of soil you happen to have.
Step2
Buy mint plants at the nursery for planting in early spring, as soon as the ground can be worked. (Mint does not grow well from seed.)

Step3

Plant mint in its ideal conditions if you want a vigorous ground cover. To contain its enthusiasm, give it a less-than-perfect home (for instance, full sun and soil that's on the dry side).

Step4

Set plants 12 to 18 inches apart, depending on the variety. To control their rampant ways, plant them in bottomless containers sunk into the soil. Clay drainage tiles, about 10 inches deep and 6 to 8 inches across, are ideal.

Step5

Keep the soil moist until the plants are established.

Step6

Pinch stem ends off each spring to keep plants bushy. At the end of the gardening season, prune plants back to near ground level and top-dress with compost.

Step7

Harvest sprigs as you need them throughout the growing season.

You can also grow your mint indoors, in a large planter.
